Shed Away Holiday
Embarrassment
One of the more embarrassing
situations for holiday hosts and hostesses is unwanted pet hair in their
homes. Virtually all dogs and cats shed. Even within breeds,
some individuals have more hair or thicker undercoats and will shed in
higher volumes. Shedding cannot be stopped, but it can certainly be
managed to avoid allergic Aunt Liz being covered from sweater to socks this
holiday season!
A dog's hair is naturally shed when it is old, damaged, or no longer
needed. However, dogs will also shed if their skin is irritated from
conditions such as allergies. Here in our salon, we help keep your
dog's skin and hair healthy and lessen the shedding by effectively removing
hair with treatments specific to your dog's needs. After all, the
only things under the tree this year should be gifts, not hair!
Here are a few helpful
suggestions:
1.
Feed a high-quality pet
food.
One of the first ingredients listed on the label should be meat meal.
Choose grain-free foods: no corn, soy, wheat, sorghum, shells, or hulls.
2.
Brush your pet. While the
family is gathered around the television watching holiday favorites, use
that brush especially on the neck, shoulders, thighs and rear
britches! Regular grooming at home and professionally are both
important. Put us on speed dial (859-255-BARK) and ask for a 15- or
30-minute de-shedding procedure after the bath to really control loose hair.
3.
Control allergies and
fleas.
Work with your vet to control inhalant allergies that irritate skin.
We use several great shampoo formulas in our own salon and can also send
home with you. Use a spot-on flea prevention product or oral tablets
to control infestations.
4.
Vacuum often. You
probably already do, but this helps to keep track of when and subsequently
why your dog is shedding. A clean house one day, and hairy floors the
next means you need help!
Contact us if we can be of service and to
schedule your holiday grooming appointments. Tracy Campanella,
our Master Stylist, and our entire staff is here to help!
